Where have we been?

Posted by Caroline on April 25, 2007

Apologies for the lack of update this week…..we have been on our hols to Canada and only just returned. But expect a post all about Emily’s adventures across the Atlantic once we’ve had a chance to do the unpacking and get over the jetlag!

It’s Fang!

Posted by Caroline on April 16, 2007

Finally, after months and months of what would appear to be the symptoms, Emily has sprouted her first tooth.

We had been suspecting something was imminent for a while now, since she’s been a bit more restless at night, dribbling for England and generally showing all the signs associated with impending toothiness (although fortunately she was as happy as usual and didn’t appear too bothered by it), but it was only at the weekend, when I felt her bottom gum, did I notice the sharp little ridge that can only mean a tooth has popped through.

Since then – apart from getting very excited – I’ve been checking it on a daily basis, and so far it is just a sharp little ridge, but of course it can now only be a matter of time before the rest of the tooth appears.

So far, she has been intrigued by the new arrival, constantly poking her tongue over it – and of course she is still biting everything in sight. Now she has one, of course, we can’t help thinking it’ll be only a matter of time before she has a whole mouthful. Yet another sign that my little girl is growing up a lot faster than I could ever have imagined.

New Tricks

Posted by Caroline on April 9, 2007

Following on from last week’s announcement that Emily had pulled herself up to a standing position, she is now gaining even more new skills at a rate of knots.

Firstly, we now have a baby who waves. Specifically, she likes to wave to her daddy, although she’ll waggle that little hand at anybody who pays her attention. What’s more, she’ll also stop waving if you tell her to, which is even more impressive.

We now also have a baby who is capable of moving herself from sitting to crawling in one smooth move. Which in one way is fantastic, as it means I can actually sit her on her playmat knowing she can crawl off whenever she feels like it (rather than rely on Mummy to put her on her front) – but isn’t quite so much fun when I leave her sitting up on our bed and she decides to crawl off, or when she crawls all over the changing table, veering perilously close to the edge in her quest to throw nappy sacks all over the room or try and chew on the tube of Metanium cream without my noticing.

Perhaps most exciting though is the way in which her speech appears to be developing. We may be wrong, but we’re convinced she’s started saying ‘Daddy’. And then saying it over and over again, sounding very pleased with herself in the process. The other day she even looked at Daddy and said it. Of course now she’s mastered that, I intend to begin her ‘Mummy’ training…..

Guess Who’s Standing!

Posted by Caroline on April 2, 2007

Look at me Daddy, I’m standing!A couple of days ago we finally got around to lowering Emily’s cot, after it became apparent that if we left it much longer she might attempt to climb out of it.

Naturally I was a bit nervous as to how she would adjust to her new sleeping arrangements – but as with everything else, she took it in her stride – and within five minutes of being placed in the new lowered cot was already pushing herself up on her knees to look over the edge.

My mother reliably informed me that now the cot was on its lowest setting, it would only be a matter of time before Emily started pulling herself up to a standing position, something she has been trying to do for a while.

Naturally, I spent the weekend encouraging her to do this (since she can stand up, but only with help from Mummy and Daddy so far) but all weekend all she did was get up on her knees and stare up at me as if to say, “Yeah, so what now?”

This morning, however, was a very different story. I’d popped her in her cot after breakfast while I sorted out what she was going to wear, and next thing I knew she was back in her kneeling position, gripping the top of the bars with an expression of intense concentration on her little face. And then she simply pulled herself up.

So once again my mother was right – not only did Emily master the art of standing in her cot but it took her only two days to do it.

Only problem is, of course, that now she wants to do it all the time – cue a day of her standing on the sofa trying to grab things, standing in her high chair and flatly refusing to sit down, and even grabbing hold of my leg to try and pull herself up.

Of course, this development means only one thing – that walking cannot be far off. And then the fun will really begin.
