Habit Forming

By rights my child should pick up good (and just occasionally bad) habits from their parents, yet in my case it seems to be the other way round.
Just lately I’ve found myself imitating certain aspects of Emily’s behaviour – for example her tendency to rub her eyes when she’s tired (which I now do) and her fondness for sleeping on her tummy (I haven’t slept on my front for years but she looks so comfy and content when she is doing it, I’ve started following her lead).
Both of which of course leave me wondering what else I might pick up from her. Although fortunately Emily’s tendency to shove her hands into her full food bowl, drop banana-covered spoons on the floor, dribble on her playmat and chew on TV remote controls (usually switching on the TV in the process) have thus far passed me by.
Only little babies do that...

🙂 Funny! I suppose your colleagues at work may have something to say about that “two handed food scoop” at lunchtime… BUT don’t worry about the remote chewing, it’s in the privacy of your own home! 🙂

Very astute observations that you seem to be picking up some habits from your child! I have found that I now pronounce words just as my son does. Instead of ‘banana’, I say ‘nana’. Instead of my cat’s *true* name of “Loki”, I call him “Lolli”. I really need to stop this, because otherwise how will my son learn the real word? I do find that I naturally copy him, though. We just love to be like our babies! 🙂

I picked up playing with my hair. My son used to play with his hair when he was tired. I found myself after awhile twiling my hair around my fingers. Kind of funny when you think about it.

Mostly for me, it was picking up on names my daughter called objects and people. More than one person in the family was christened with a new nickname that way. As one example, my daughter couldn’t say “Eric” when she was little so it came out “Icky” and he’s still “Icky” to this day. 🙂

Our son has definitely named some of his toys, like “Bubba” for his beloved bear (it was his way of saying “Blue Bear”) For those sorts of things, I have no issue with saying the same word that he uses. He also says “Nie-Nie” for his blankie and “Pah” for his pacifier. We use those same words, because they are actually the names he has assigned. Otherwise, we try our best to say the word correctly for his benefit. 🙂
