Impromptu Performance

Yay! Noisy toys rule, Mummy…….!It’s been nearly eight months since Emily was born, and in that time she has amassed an enviable collection of toys – from squashy cuddly things which are good for chewing and throwing to hi-tech toys which bleep and whistle and make all manner of noise.

And it’s the latter which baffle me – not least their ability to start making a noise all by themselves. I have lost count of the number of times I’ve picked up Laugh n’Learn Puppy once little girl is in bed only to have it start singing and chattering of its own accord (due to its super-sensitive controls).

The trouble is, of course, not only does it burst into song at the slightest touch, it does it at the most inopportune moments. Puppy is one of Emily’s favourite toys and as such it always accompanies her when I am at work and she spends the day at grandma’s place.

Yet I have lost count of the number of times I’ve carted it down the stairs to the car, only to treat all our neighbours to a medley of Head Shoulders Knees And Toes, The ABC Song and other kiddie classics  on the way down – simply because the lightest movement is likely to set it off. Once it even carried on once it was locked in the boot of the car, leaving Emily to stare around, wondering what had happened to her pal.

Her toy radio, something else she loves, also has a habit of revealing its musical content when it’s picked up and put away at the end of the day – and once our cleaner got a surprise when she moved it out of the way of the vacuum cleaner, only for it to respond accordingly with a tune or two. And this evening I moved my legs further under the table, only to feel a vibrating movement. Further investigation revealed that I had accidentally pressed the ‘on’ switch on Emily’s bouncy chair with my feet.

Perhaps most alarming, however, is the way in which Baby Tad has been behaving lately. After months of staring at it in wonder, Emily has decided she loves Tad and it is a frequent visitor to her cot when she is in there during the day.

Yet there have been a number of incidents recently when I have been in the lounge with her, only to hear Tad singing in her room (despite there being no-one in there to press the on switch). How this happens, I have no idea. But given my previous conviction that Tad is a little on the scary side, I’m not sure I want to know.

Scary… yes. You have reminded me of the same kind of toy we used to have. It was just creepy and it kept making its noises at the strangest times. My daughter thought it was funny but I couldn’t deal with it and tossed the thing. 🙂 I’m glad it wasn’t a favorite of hers when I did that!

I’ve always thought that some toys have a mind of their own! Hopefully they don’t decide to make noise in the middle of night when Emily is sleeping…!

Looks like Emily is having a *ball* in all of those toys! My son’s toys will turn on by themselves sometimes, too. It always makes me jump, especially if it happens later at night. How fun that Emily has such favorite toys that she loves. Those comfort items will help tremendously with any transitions she has to make.

One thing that I have found out over the years with toys like this is when the batteries are starting to get low they sometimes will just go off by themselves. We had a grill that would talk and make sizzling noices and when the batteries were getting low it would start talking and you couldn’t get it off. Drove us nuts until we finally figured it out.

I wondered about the batteries in our creepy little fuzzy monstrosity, too, but then we changed them and it still did it. It wasn’t just “singing” or something… it was electronic sounds, *but* it was motion activated. I knew no one was walking around the baby’s room in the middle of the night, so to hear that thing making its noise as if someone was in the room was just too unnerving for me.

Maybe you’ll just have to get more cuddly toys than noise making toys…looks like Emily is already have fun with the assortment building in her crib! Very cute.

Now that my son is older, I am encouraging him to make sounds for his toys, instead of expecting them to make sounds for him. I want to expand his imagination a bit. So, I’ve taken most of the batteries out of most toys. There are a few that you can’t play without batteries. But, others are just as fun and it is funny to hear the sounds he creates.

I can remember when we had our dog and he was constantly going into the boys room at night and he would set off the motion sensor stuffed animals. The worst was this big bird stuffed animal that would constantly go off.

I wish we would have *had* a pet at the time ours was going off in the middle of the night. At least I would have had something to blame it on. Hehe Now I have a cat, but no more strange toys that come to life. 🙂

We had a Baby Tad which had a battery problem, so the voice slowed down considerably and it sounded possessed. Of course, the kids loved it.

  11. We have that Puppy. I HATE it. It came from my mother in law. I think she hates me.

I think I now understand why my mother refused to buy me any toys that made noise! 🙂

I used to be “that aunt” that bought all the noisy crazy toys and just didn’t get it when my sister-in-law gave me a glare. Now I understand!!! You should have seen the light up colorful contraption that my sister-in-law gave my son. Hideous! I very quickly put it away, and he has never even seen it. Some music toys, I can take. But, others are just plain noisy.

There is one toy which we promptly got rid of…if you didn’t play with it after a few seconds it would start singing “play with meeeee!” Oh how we hated this toy!”

Makes ya wonder if some of those manufactures are really deeply into torturing parents, doesn’t it?! A toy yelling “play with meeeee?” Eeew, I would have “lost” those batteries real fast, too! 🙂
